MotherBees Jujubes

An Ode to the Jujube

Jujubes are one of MotheBees' favorite ingredients, so we include them wherever and whenever possible in our home cooking and in the recipes we share with you.

This magical fruit has been cultivated for thousands of years. Native to China, this magical fruit has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years, thanks to its many health benefits.

Although commonly referred to as the "red date" or "Chinese date," jujubes are actually not dates at all, but rather a species of Ziziphus in the buckthorn family.

These small, round flavor bombs have a sweet, slightly caramelized flavor that is delicious on its own, or as an ingredient in a cooked soup or tea.

Jujubes are incredibly rich in vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, and magnesium. They also contain antioxidants, to help protect our systems from damage caused by free radicals.

For those of us in need of a little extra help in the rest and relaxation departments, jujubes have delicious tonic effects, wonderful for promoting sleep as well as stress and anxiety reduction.

Jujubes are also a good source of dietary fiber, which helps to promote healthy digestion and prevent constipation. They are low in calories and have a low glycemic index, making them a good choice for people who are trying to manage their blood sugar.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, jujubes are often used to help treat a variety of health conditions, including insomnia, anxiety, and digestive issues. They help circulate the blood and nourish the liver, and are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to relieve swelling and pain in the body.

Because of all the numerous natural health benefits, jujubes are a delicious and powerful addition to the pantry for anyone, but especially so for those who are pregnant or in postpartum recovery.

Discovering new ways to enjoy jujubes and their myriad benefits is a treasure in itself. They can be consumed raw, either whole (watch out for the pit) or chopped over yogurt, granola, or congee. They can be brewed into a naturally sweet and nutty tea, or tossed into a simmering braise or broth to fortify the flavors and nutrition. The sky is the limit!
